Microsoft 365 directory in Android contacts: the work profile guide
On Android, colleagues from the Microsoft 365 directory show up as unknown numbers, and the work profile adds a layer of separation. Why it happens, what the workarounds are worth, and how to see their names on every call.

Your sales manager calls you from the road. He is in the Microsoft 365 directory, you talk to him every day in Teams… and your Android phone shows a number with no name. On a managed device with a work profile, the question gets trickier: where should company contacts live, and will the phone find them when it rings?
In a previous article, we saw why the Microsoft 365 directory never reaches iPhone contacts. Here is the Android version, and what Android Enterprise changes.
The same gap as on iPhone
The company directory lives in Microsoft Entra ID: it feeds the global address list (GAL) you see in Outlook and Teams. But Microsoft 365 does not publish it to the Android Contacts app, and that native address book is what the phone checks to display the caller's name. A colleague who is not in it stays an unknown number, even if they sit two desks away.
The usual workarounds on Android
Saving contacts from Outlook
Outlook for Android can save contacts to the phone's address book, but only the personal contacts of your mailbox, the ones you created yourself. The company directory is not part of them.
An Exchange account in a mail app
Depending on the mail app and the manufacturer, an Exchange account sometimes lets you search the directory for a name. It is a one-off lookup: nothing is stored on the phone, and the incoming call is not recognised.
CSV exports, vCards and scripts
Importing a directory export on each device works on day one, then the list ages with every arrival, departure or number change. Scripts that copy the GAL into every mailbox need a server and elevated rights on every mailbox, and leave a copy of the directory in each account.
What the work profile changes
With Android Enterprise, most companies manage phones in one of two ways:
Work profile: the phone, often personally owned, is split into two spaces. Work apps, marked with a briefcase icon, and their data stay in an isolated profile that the company manages and can wipe without touching the rest.
Fully managed device: the phone belongs to the company and everything is managed, with no split.
With a work profile, the company directory belongs in the work profile's address book, not the personal one. It is cleaner: work contacts do not mix with private ones, do not end up in the user's personal backup, and go away with the profile when the employee leaves.
That leaves caller identification. Android can show the name of a work profile contact when the phone receives a call, as long as company policy allows it. In Microsoft Intune, the work profile device restrictions include a setting that allows or blocks searching work contacts and displaying their caller ID in the personal profile. Make sure it is not blocked: it is often the reason for an "unknown number" even though the contacts are there.
How Calliente solves it on Android
Calliente is an iOS and Android app that reads colleagues from Microsoft Entra ID and writes them to the native address book. A Microsoft 365 administrator approves it once in Entra ID, with consent limited to reading the directory and revocable at any time.
In the work profile. On an Android Enterprise device, contacts are stored in the work profile: a clean split between personal and work data.
Always up to date. Synchronisation is automatic and daily: arrivals, departures and number changes follow Entra ID, with no action from users or IT.
No copy on our servers. Contacts are read from Microsoft 365 by the app, on the phone. Calliente does not store your directory.
Deployed through Managed Google Play. With Microsoft Intune or VMware Workspace ONE, as a required or available install, on work profile and fully managed devices alike.
Under control. With the Business plan, you choose the synchronised groups: a field team can receive only the contacts it needs.
Try it on your own tenant
The most convincing test is seeing your real colleagues appear on a real call. The 30-day free trial runs on your Microsoft 365 tenant, for 2 users and with no credit card. After that, Calliente costs €6 per user per year (€8 for the Business plan).
